Step-by-step guide to designing properly dimensioned switchbacks for steep terrain using our specialized calculator.
Switchback Design Principles
The calculator applies key principles of effective switchback design:
- Platform Dimensions: Properly sized turning platform based on trail type and radius
- Approach Angles: Optimal angles for the trail legs entering and exiting the switchback
- Excavation Requirements: Estimated cut depth needed for a level platform
- Safety Factors: Adjustable margins to account for varying conditions and user groups
Enter Hillside Slope
Input the steepness of the hillside where you're building the switchback (as a percentage). Measure this in the field using a clinometer for accuracy.
Enter Desired Trail Grade
Input the target grade for the trail segments leading to and from the switchback (as a percentage). This should be a sustainable grade based on your soil conditions and rainfall.
Enter Turning Radius
Input the radius of the turn from center to the middle of the trail (in feet or meters). Larger radii create more gentle, flowing turns but require more space.
Adjust Safety Factor
Optionally adjust the safety factor to increase dimensions for more conservative designs, especially in challenging terrain or for multi-use trails.
Review Results
Examine the calculated platform width, excavation depth, and leg lengths. Use these measurements to lay out your switchback in the field.

The calculator will instantly provide results as you change the input values. No need to click a calculate button.
Building a proper switchback involves more than just the dimensions. Consider these additional factors for successful switchback construction.
Platform Construction
Create a level platform for the turning area. Ensure proper compaction and drainage to prevent erosion and maintain the shape over time.
Prevent Shortcutting
Use natural barriers like rocks and logs to discourage shortcutting. Consider planting dense native vegetation in the inside corner.
Drainage Considerations
Incorporate grade reversals before the switchback to shed water. Ensure the platform has a slight outslope (2-3%) to prevent water pooling.
Approach and Exit Alignment
Design the approach and exit legs to be tangent to the turning platform. This creates a smooth flow and prevents awkward entry or exit angles.
